Today is the 31st anniversary the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act(ANILCA). On this day in 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed the law that would provide for the creation or modification of 13 National Park Service properties. Other lands were set aside for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Forest Service.
Parks Covered by ANILCA
- Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve
- Bering Land Bridge National Preserve
- Cape Krusenstern National Monument
- Denali National Park
- Gates Of The Arctic National Park and Preserve

We aren’t going to get into each of the parks here as that could turn into quite the long post, but if you’d like to read up more on ANILCA and what it means, you can read the text of the law and the NPS hosts a book covering some of the history of the NPS in Alaska along with ANILCA.
