Pixar’s Cars Route 66 Inspiration

Posted by on January 27, 2012

My almost 3 year old has been on a huge Cars kick lately, sometimes watching it two or three times in an afternoon.  Anyone who has ever seen the movie has probably guessed at its inspiration from Route 66, that most famous of highways that served as the major east-west corridor until being replaced by the Interstate System and decommissioned.

While it isn’t a national park, portions of Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America, or the Mother Road) are still preserved today as a National Scenic Byway.

Route 66 News did a great writeup back when the first Cars movie came out comparing the sights in the movie to real locations along Route 66.  It makes for a very interesting read.
